The National Assembly of Kenya Supports VP Gachagua’s Impeachment
On Tuesday evening, October 8, 281 Kenyan Members of Parliament voted to remove Rigathi Gachagua from office. Gachagua had been the nation’s vice president since William Ruto was elected in 2022. One Kenyan MP abstained, while forty-four Kenyan MPs voted against his poverty.Following the announcement of the impeachment motion’s outcome, scenes of celebration were evident.
Gachagua has defended himself in Parliament and in a broadcast speech after being charged with corruption and other irregularities, as well as backing historic anti-government rallies in June.
Gachagua would be the first deputy president to be impeached since the 2010 adoption of the new constitution if the Senate supports the motion as well.
On Monday, October 7, Gachagua defended his acquisition of riches by claiming that several of the assets mentioned in the impeachment motion were owned by his deceased brother. He justified spending money on renovations for his official residence, claiming it needed to be “dignified” because it was in poor condition.
For months, there was conjecture about the consequences of Gachagua’s actions with President William Ruto. The two men’s animosity was shown by this action.
