Madrid Declares Ceuta a “National Security Interest

The situation in Ceuta has been deemed a “national security interest” by the Spanish government, which has also announced the establishment of a certified organization that will bring together a number of authorities in order to better coordinate their response in order to guaranty the safe transit of migrants back to Morocco.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez presided over a special security meeting that took place at Moncloa Palace on Tuesday morning. This was followed by a meeting of the cabinet following the meeting.

Within the context of a news conference held subsequent to the meetings, the Minister for Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, who was appointed as the coordinator for the newly established body, provided an overview of several essential characteristics of the new entity.

Torres emphasized the importance of handling the return of migrants and minors who are still in Ceuta in a humane manner as a “priority” while also adhering to international law and protecting human rights.
