Tanzania’s Vise Government Steps Down, Citing the President’s Wish for Reform
Emmanuel Nchimbi, the vise president of Tanzania, announced his resignation and retirement from politics, citing his growing conviction that President Samia Suluhu Hassan desired a different deputy. His retirement, which takes effect on September 4, coincides with mounting concerns about media freedom and political polarization.
On Tuesday, August 25, Nchimbi made his announcement, stating that he had written to Hassan to let her know that he would step down as vise president and retire from active politics and public service.
He claimed that in August 2025, he had assured the president that he would resign if she ever desired a different vise president. Nchimbi declared that he was now “beyond doubt” certain that Hassan wanted a change. Instead of becoming effective immediately, his resignation will take effect on September 4. Less than a week has passed since the government banned the critical MwanaHALISI newspaper’s publishing license for six months.
According to the newspaper, Nchimbi was allegedly resisting calls to step down and that he and Hassan were at odds. Authorities claimed that the publication had violated professional norms for verification, accuracy, and balance.
