Guinea: A Horrific Landfill Collapse in Conakry Claims at Least 30 Lives

Heavy rain throughout the nite caused a landslide at the Dar Es Salam trash site, which resulted in the calamity early on Sunday. Robert Kamano Sâa, a resident and eyewitness, stated that although people raced to the scene to look for survivors, the ground kept collapsing.

“The initial part collapsed. People shouted, “Is there anyone down there?” as they attempted to save the day. Is anyone down there? To check if anyone was there, they ran over and climbed onto the rubble. At that point, the second part crumbled and cascaded down in three sections. And that’s what the masses were exposed to.

Authorities said that several surrounding homes were damaged and six persons suffered significant injuries. Emergency personnel searched the massive waste piles for survivors as part of a search and rescue effort. The Dar Es Salam dump was scheduled to close on Sunday, and nearby neighbours had already been told to vacate.
