Omar al-Bashir, the Deposed Leader of Sudan, Relocated to Merowe Hospital Alongside other Former Authorities
Omar al-Bashir, the former leader of Sudan who was overthrown several years ago, has been transferred from a prison north of Omdurman to Merowe Hospital, which is located around 450 miles from the country’s capital, Khartoum.
Al-Bashir’s medical staff asked that the 80-year-old to be moved for medical reasons, since he needed treatments that the Wadi Seedna military base, where he was being held, would not provide. Both the former minister of defence and the former minister of sports moved with him.
Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court, which Sudan has promised to turn him over to. The court has declared Al-Bashir sought on allegations of war crimes and genocide connected to the 2003 Darfur War.
Al-Bashir’s government responded to the insurrection initiated by rebels from the ethnic community of central and sub-Saharan Africans in the area with a series of bombings and militia incursions. These militias are charged with rapes and mass executions.
With Al-Bashir’s transfer, Sudan is still dealing with a conflict that erupted in April of last year between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army. The violence has resulted in millions of people being displaced and severe famine for about half of the nation’s population.
