The Opposition in Guinea-Bissau Demands That the Constitutional referendum be Boycotted
A boycott of Guinea-Bissau’s impending constitutional referendum is being called for by the opposition PAIGC. A new Constitution adopted by the National Transitional Council will be put into effect by the vote on August 30.
Days following a presidential election, in November, the army overthrew the head of state and halted the election process. Voters will first be asked if they accept the revisions before the December elections, which are intended to restore civilian authority.
Political parties have been left out of the process, according to PAIGC, which also cited a “clear tendency to rig the process.” A presidential system would replace the parliamentary one under the proposed reforms. The idea would allow the president to dissolve parliament and choose the prime minister and other government officials.
