Injuries as Violence Breaks Out at an Anti-Immigrant Demonstration in South Africa

One foreign individual was arrested after a violent protest against unauthorised migrants in South Africa on Thursday, while a community leader reported that five Congolese were injured. The demonstration took place in Durban, a port city that has been the focal point of weeks of protests against illegal migration, which have resulted in tens of thousands of foreign nationals fleeing the country and at least four fatalities.

An encampment of several hundred foreign nationals outside a government building was the target of what police described as a clean-up campaign by roughly 100 demonstrators from an anti-illegal migrant group. Thirteen weeks ago, foreigners many of them were from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) moved to the location in search of safety from South African mobs that were advocating against unauthorised migrants. A foreign national threw a stone that landed on a police officer during the disturbance, according to the police. According to a statement, police took the individual into custody, but no specifics were provided.

Five Congolese nationals, including two children, were injured in the altercation, a foreign group leader told AFP. “Today’s march was extremely violent,” remarked DRC Bishop Raphael.When they discovered us here, they assaulted our people right away. By being here, we are not breaking any laws. “This is not necessary,” he declared.
