Xi Jinping Visits the Grand Egyptian Museum as China and Egypt Develop Strategic Ties
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi paid a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum on Wednesday as part of efforts to boost economic and political ties. Sisi welcomed Xi, who was making his first visit to Egypt in a decade, with a 21-gun salute at Cairo’s Ittihadiya presidential palace before the two leaders met.
The visit comes as China strives to enhance its influence in the Middle East, amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict and growing concerns about regional security and shipping. During their discussions, Xi pushed Middle Eastern countries to take more control of their own affairs and oppose outside involvement.
He said China supports regional peace and security dialogues and is willing to collaborate with other countries to preserve international shipping lanes. China is a big importer of Iranian oil and has opposed moves to economically isolate Tehran, while simultaneously wanting to protect its own regional business interests.
