The Deadline for the U.S. to Expel the South African Ambassador is Friday

The ambassador of South Africa to the United States is required to leave the country by Friday, according to a statement from the State Department. Following Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s determination that Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool was no longer welcome in the United States, this decision was made.

Following his social media announcement of this decision, the South African embassy staff was summoned to the State Department and given a formal diplomatic note outlining the issue.  Rasool’s diplomatic privileges and immunities expired on Monday, requiring him to leave the country by the end of the week, according to State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce.

Although the U.S. and South Africa have a generally good diplomatic relationship, she pointed out that there are still issues that need to be resolved. These remarks were unacceptable to the United States, not just to the president, but to every American,” Bruce said, emphasizing the value of having ambassadors who are able to build connections.

A 62-year-old seasoned politician spoke about President Donald Trump’s plans and how they might affect Africa in a webinar organized by a South African think group.
