Rwanda Asks Diplomats to Go and Severs Ties With Belgium

The statement said, in part, that Belgium has continuously weakened Rwanda, both before and during the current crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in which Belgium has a long and bloody history, particularly in its actions against Rwanda. In response to Kigali’s aggression in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, Belgium recently terminated commercial agreements and halted funding. Rwanda’s president, Paul Kagame, made a bold statement during a press conference in Kigali on Sunday, promising to protect Rwanda’s interests against outside meddling.

Belgium, which controlled Rwanda as a colony until 1962, was singled out by Kagame, who claimed that it had perpetrated crimes against Rwandans and vowed to resist its “neo-colonial interference.Kigali’s involvement in the crisis in eastern Congo, where its proxy rebel group controls two provinces rich in natural resources, has drawn more attention from around the world.
