Qatar Foreign Minister Enters Tehran as Iran-U.S. Crisis Initiatives Continue

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani travelled to Tehran on Thursday for discussions aimed at lowering tensions between Iran and the United States.

Al Thani met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi as diplomatic attempts continued amid mounting tensions and growing threats to commerce in the Strait of Hormuz. The visit was meant to find “ways to de-escalate tensions” and create circumstances for talks, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry stated.

The talks were intended to address freedom of travel along the key canal and the potential of returning the situation to what it was before the conflict. The visit followed a report by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organisation that an oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz.

The incident, which reportedly involved a fire aboard the vessel, occurred on Tuesday in waters between Iran and Oman. There were no reports of environmental damage and the crew was safe. The Strait of Hormuz is a key worldwide shipping route and has been a key flashpoint in the dispute with Iran claiming ownership of the passage. The event underscores the risks commercial vessels face even as Oman and Iran are said to be in talks over rules for conducting cargo through the strait.
