Mundubile, a Prominent Figure in Zambia’s Opposition, has Been Arrested on Suspicion of Treason

Brian Mundubile, a prominent member of the Zambian opposition, and Makebi Zulu, his presidential running mate, were arrested on Thursday by the police on suspicion of treason. According to reports, Mundubile turned himself in to the authorities after two weeks of hiding out in response to a summons on a supposed threat to national security.

Despite receiving 60% of the vote, 55-year-old lawyer Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected as president this month. The 55-year-old came in second place. Despite Mundubile’s promises to contest the outcome, Zambia’s court was closed on Monday, the final day to submit an objection, citing “security concerns.

Human Rights Watch, an international NGO, characterised the closure as “without credible explanation” and a “blow to the administration of law, transparency, and due process in Zambia.” This is according to the organization.

Hichilema will be able to take the oath of office on Tuesday, since the Constitutional Court announced on Tuesday that it had not received any appeal contesting the results of the election. Chief Justice Mumba Malila, on the other hand, said that a public citizen had emailed him a petition.

He described the submission as “highly irregular” but informed that he had forwarded it to the Constitutional Court for review. Following a home invasion by police the day following the August 13 election, Mundubile sought sanctuary with a global human rights organisation.
