German Police Conduct Widespread Operations Against an Opposition Group in Eritrea

Authorities on Wednesday conducted raids in six German states in a broad operation against people suspected of belonging to a global plot to topple the Eritrean government. The German federal prosecutor’s office has named 17 individuals as founders or members of the German branch of Brigade N’Hamedu, which it classifies as a terrorist organisation.

Human rights organisations have long considered Eritrea to be among the world’s most oppressive nations. This has caused divides within its diaspora that occasionally turn into violent altercations. According to the prosecution, the German division of Brigade N’Hamedu has been involved in violent events associated with the Eritrean government since at least 2022.

The violent riots during the Eritrean festivals in Giessen on August 20, 2022, and August 7-8, 2023, as well as the unrest at an Eritrean association seminar in Stuttgart on September 16, 2023, are among the occurrences cited by authorities. Dozens of demonstrators were arrested during these incidents, and several police officers suffered significant injuries. 56 people were sentenced to prison during the 2023 Stuttgart riots, according to the state interior minister of Baden-Württemberg, some of the rulings are still being appealed.
