German and French foreign Ministers Visit Damascus for the First Time

The first formal visit to Syria by top European diplomats since the overthrow of previous President Bashar al-Assad was made by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, who made the historic trip to Damascus. The French embassy Barrot visited reopened its doors a few weeks ago after a 13-year hiatus. He stressed France’s commitment to Syria’s future in remarks made during the visit.

The mobilization of Syrians a little less than a month ago gave rise to a new dream: the hope of a peaceful, stable, and independent Syria. “I hope the Syrian people’s dreams can come true,” Barrot said. “The hope is genuine, but it is brittle. More than ever, France supports Syrians now.

In the meanwhile, Baerbock emphasized the importance of inclusivity for Syria’s democratic future. She underlined that guaranteeing that all racial and religious groups are represented in Syria’s government is essential to a true political reconciliation between Europe and Syria. The two ministers will meet with Syrian civil society groups and Ahmad al-Sharaa, the leader of the HTS group that was instrumental in overthrowing Assad.

Western countries, like as France and Germany, have kept HTS classified as a terrorist organization despite the advancements. Baerbock also emphasized the significance of holding democratic elections on time, emphasizing that political reforms and human rights must not be compromised in the interim.
