The French Foreign Minister Condemns the Iranian Jailed Couple’s Alleged Espionage

Jean-Noël Barrot, the foreign minister of France, condemned the spy accusations against two French citizens who were sentenced to three years in jail in Iran on Thursday. Jacques Paris and Cécile Kohler were charged with espionage for Israel and plotting to topple the government and “corruption on Earth.”
According to Barrot, the Iranian authorities have not publicly informed France of the allegations against the two French nationals. If the allegations evoked were proved, we would consider them totally unjustified and unfounded” , Barrot stated.
While travelling to Iran in May 2022, Kohler, 40, and her partner Paris, 72, were taken into custody. They were held in Tehran’s Evin Prison until last month.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he intended to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday night, calling Iran’s imprisonment of Paris and Kohler a “provocation,” a “affront,” and a “unacceptable choice of aggression.” On the French station BFMTV, Macron stated, “The answer won’t be long in coming.” Following recent Israeli raids on the jail, the couple’s family wanted verification that they were still alive, but a French ambassador was able to see them earlier this week.
