The EU will Press Libyan Authorities to take More Stringent Action on Mediterranean Migrant maritime Crossings

In response to an increase in illegal migration across the Mediterranean, European Union Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner declared on Tuesday that the EU will adopt a tough stance with Libyan authorities. Illegal border crossings along the Central Mediterranean route, which connects North Africa and Europe, increased by 48% in the first two months of 2025 compared to 2024.

Next week, Magnus Brunner and government officials from Greece, Italy, and Malta will visit Libya. He met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens to discuss the impending visit.

We are now somewhat bothered by that question. Naturally, Libya is at the top of the agenda, and we’re going there together next week because, in my opinion, we need to act quickly and firmly,” Brunner stated. To prevent boats transporting migrants from departing for Europe, the European delegation will call on Libyan authorities to take more drastic action.

According to Brunner, the group will meet with the opposition government in the east of the nation, headed by warlord Khalifa Haftar, as well as the UN-recognized administration in the west.
