UNAIDS Chairman Worries that an Impending Financial Shortage Might Undo the World’s Success against AIDS

During a news conference at the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) on Monday, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima warned that if critical financial shortages are not addressed, the world might undo decades of progress in the fight against AIDS.

Byanyima stated that if foreign funding keeps down, there might be up to 4.2 million additional AIDS-related deaths by 2029, including 300,000 children. AIDS took 630,000 lives in 2024 alone. It’s evident that a pandemic that has been waning could be resurfacing. She said, “The problem is genuine.

The UNAIDS director emphasised that the impending threat is linked to the probable loss of the world’s largest donor, which now contributes 73% of all worldwide AIDS response funding.

Byanyima asked wealthier nations to adopt innovative funding structures and regulations that allow poor countries to raise their own resources while also calling for urgent structural reforms. “We need rich countries to embrace debt justice, tax justice, intellectual property justice, and global public investment,” she told the audience. Byanyima said that without decisive action, the globe might see 6.6 million new HIV infections by the end of the decade.
