ISWAP Fighters Killed at Least 20 Soldiers in Borno Raid

On Friday, at least 20 Nigerian troops, including a commanding officer, were slain in an attack thought to be carried out by fighters from the ISIL-linked group ISWAP. The attack targeted the 149th Battalion at an army barracks in Malam-Fatori, Borno State, close the Niger border.

The assault lasted more than three hours, with ISWAP members arriving in gun trucks to overwhelm the forces, according to a surviving soldier. “They rained bullets everywhere,” the soldier recalled, explaining how they fought back but were eventually defeated.

Local sources stated that the assailants set fire to buildings and caused occupants to evacuate. Some extremists were reportedly observed in the neighbourhood until Saturday night.

ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016, has been blamed for increased violence in northeastern Nigeria this year. The region’s 15-year conflict has killed about 40,000 people and displaced over two million, spreading to neighbouring countries and leading a regional military coalition to intervene.
