A Fire in Hughes Compels 50,000 People to Leave

More than 50,000 people were placed under evacuation orders or advisories as firefighters battled to keep control of a massive and quickly spreading wildfire that stormed across rocky mountains north of Los Angeles.

In less than a day, the Hughes Fire, which started late Wednesday morning, had burned almost 16 square miles (41 square kilometres) of trees and brush close to Lake Castaic, a well-liked recreation area 40 miles (64 kilometres) away from the destructive Eaton and Palisades fires, which are in their third week of rage.

Despite the area being under a red flag warning for a critical fire risk, winds were lower than they were when the flames started, so firefighters were able to drop tens of thousands of gallons of fire retardant on the latest blaze. By Wednesday night, about 14% of the Hughes Fire had been contained.

“We’re in a completely different situation now than we were sixteen days ago,” said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone on Wednesday night.

In Ventura and Los Angeles counties, red flag warnings were maintained until 10 a.m. on Friday. As firefighters continue to search for hot areas, officials were still worried that the Palisades and Eaton fires would breach their containment lines.
