At age 89, Sam Moore, Who Was well-Known for “Soul Man” With Sam & Dave, Passed Away
The legendary soul singer Sam Moore has away. His unique voice was the driving force behind many 1960s R&B hits. He was eighty-nine. Moore passed on Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, while recuperating after surgery, according to a statement issued by his representatives.
As Sam & Dave, Moore and Dave Prater released classic classics like “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “I Thank You. After splitting up in 1970, the pair was posthumously honored in 1992 when Prater, who passed away in 1988, was admitted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Moore’s dazzling smile was as well-known as his powerful yet kind voice, which was so powerful that Bruce Springsteen often called him “the greatest living soul singer on the planet.” Moore backed up Springsteen on the rock star’s 1992 album “Human Touch” and 2023’s “Only the Strong Survive,” where he co-performed on renditions of “Soul Days” and “I Forgot to Be Your Lover.
In 1961, Prater was trying out for the talent show at the King O’ Hearts Club in Miami, where Moore was working as the emcee and host of the show. Due to their instant vocal compatibility, the two were quickly signed to a record contract.
But after Sam & Dave’s 1964 performance at the King O’ Hearts caught the attention of renowned Atlantic Records’ Ahmet Ertegun, Tom Dowd, and Jerry Wexler, they were awarded a larger contract with the company and then “loaned out” to Stax Records, Atlantic’s southern division.
