The UN Urges Haitian Authorities to Take further Steps to Safeguard People

Days after 47 people were killed and scores were abducted in a violent attack by armed gang members, the UN is urging Haitian authorities to take stronger action to protect civilians. Following a brutal gang attack earlier this week that resulted in the deaths of 47 people and the kidnapping of over 50, police in Haiti patrolled the streets of Kenscoff on Friday. Haiti’s National Police came under increasing fire for failing to stop the violent attack in a once-calm farming town tucked away in the hills close to Port-au-Prince.

Marta Hurtado, the Human Rights Office’s spokesperson, stated that over 150 heavily armed gang members assaulted the city and opened fire on individuals on Friday while speaking at the UN in Geneva. Fifty locals who had taken cover inside a Protestant church were later pursued by the attackers. They executed 22 of them in the church courtyard and 12 more behind the church after driving them off the property, according to Hurtado.

Hurtado urged the government to protect the populace and requested assistance from the participating countries for the Gang Suppression Force, a multinational security force supported by the UN that was sent to Haiti to actively remove armed offenders.
