Burkina Faso Abolishes Entry Visa Charges for African Citizens

Burkina Faso has introduced a new travel policy, waiving entry visa fees for all African nationals. The government in Ouagadougou confirmed that African visitors will no longer need to pay visa charges, though they must still complete an online application and receive approval before traveling.

Previously, the fees for foreigners were considered costly, with tourist visas priced at nearly $100 (55,000 CFA francs) and business visas reaching about $165 (93,500 CFA francs). The removal of these charges forms part of a wider initiative led by interim president Ibrahim Traoré, under a pan-Africanist agenda aiming to strengthen unity and reinforce historic ties across the continent.

Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana explained that the measure is designed not only to enhance solidarity among African nations but also to boost tourism in Burkina Faso. He highlighted that the policy would help promote Burkinabe culture and improve the country’s visibility globally. However, Sana stressed that visas remain mandatory despite being free.
