Meloni is Dealt a blow After Italy moves Migrants from Albania Following a Court Decision

In response to a court ruling in Rome, an Italian navy vessel transported migrants from asylum processing facilities in Albania to Italy on Saturday. The far-right government of Giorgia Meloni made three unsuccessful attempts to handle migrant processing in the non-EU nation.

Forty-three migrants were taken by a coast guard ship from the port of Shengjin, which is located 40 miles (66 kilometres) northwest of Tirana, the capital. On Tuesday, an Italian naval vessel carried 49 men, including them, to Albania. Six were sent back that same day because they were considered fragile or underage.

In an attempt to take the case outside of the European Union, an Italian appeals court in Rome on Friday denied permission to expedite the expulsion of forty-three asylum-seekers who had been held in Albania since Tuesday under a contentious migration agreement.

The court sent the matter to Luxembourg’s European Court of Justice, which is anticipated to render a decision on February 25 about the earlier instances, where a string of decisions from lower courts has caused a rift between the Italian legal system and the Meloni government.

Judges also declined to allow the expulsion of far smaller groups of migrants in October and November, asking the European Court to clarify which nations were safe to repatriate those whose asylum petitions were denied.
