The Leader Demands a Jail Facility as the Ceuta Immigration Situation Worsens
After tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco last month, Spain is under increasing pressure over the Ceuta migrant problem. Madrid maintains that border controls and security procedures are still in place, despite the enclave’s leader’s calls for a prison facility.
Nearly two weeks after an unprecedented flow of about 72,000 migrants crossed the border from Morocco on July 30 and 31, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares met with the leader of Ceuta on Tuesday.
According to Albares, Ceuta and nearby Melilla continue to maintain the integrity of the Schengen area. In Ceuta and Melilla, the integrity of the Schengen area is fully guaranteed,” he declared.
Additionally, he advocated for increased European assistance for the two Spanish enclaves, contending that consideration should be given to their unique social and economic conditions.
Approximately 70,000 migrants have subsequently returned to Morocco, according to data from the Spanish government. However, thousands of people—including hundreds of unaccompanied minors who cannot just be deported—remain in Ceuta.
