Nigerian Prisoners Who were Freed Spoke About their Experiences in Captivity

In what President Bola Tinubu described as the nation’s largest rescue effort in a single day, almost 300 persons who had been abducted in various raids throughout northern Nigeria were freed. Among those released were 145 individuals, the majority of whom had been abducted in neighboring Niger state, and 163 individuals who had been seized from the Woro community in Kwara state’s Kaiama area in February.

Officials just stated that the captives were released from a jungle after being held captive for months without providing any specifics regarding the rescue. Amira Saliu, a kidnap victim, told the media in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Friday about her experience:

They kept us near the river, and planes often passed over the region. They told us to put out any fires we had started and to be quiet so we wouldn’t be noticed whenever they saw an aircraft overhead.They occasionally fed us, but other times they didn’t, and our kids went to bed hungry. While we were in captivity, a number of pregnant ladies gave birth, and there were sick people among us.

When they inquired, I told them there were no nurses other than me. Since I was the only nurse present, I helped the expectant mothers give birth. I assisted ten or so women in giving birth without the use of gloves. I assisted them with my hands.
