UN leader António Guterres Urges Intercultural Communication

In a video message released on Tuesday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the advancement of international solidarity and understanding via communication. In honour of the inaugural International Day for Dialogue Among Civilisations, the UN Chief issued this appeal. Mutual understanding and global solidarity” should be promoted, he urged, and the world should “answer hate with humanity.

In the absence of conversation, ignorance takes its place. Voices of intolerance and xenophobia are becoming more prevalent worldwide, and they are exacerbated by hate speech and false information spread online. In order to create bridges of understanding and trust in our broken society, conversation is not an option.

A resolution spearheaded by China and co-sponsored by more than 80 nations was approved by the UN General Assembly in 2024, designating June 10 as the annual International Day for Dialogue Among Civilisations.

The UN said humanitarian issues reached “unprecedented levels, with 323.4 million people needing assistance worldwide” in the same year. The group cited wars, such as those in Sudan, Ukraine, and Gaza, and climate change as major contributors to “displacement, hunger, and destruction.
