The worldwide risk from a deadly Ebola outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo “remains low,” the World Health Organization president said Wednesday, following the confirmation of a case in France.

On Wednesday, France revealed the first confirmed case of Ebola on its territory: a doctor who had returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a big outbreak is underway. The case is the first of the deadly haemorrhagic fever detected outside of Africa during the current outbreak, which has also hit Uganda.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, urged against “over-reaction” to the case. stated that there is “no need for panic” and that “the risk to the rest of the world is low”.

He emphasized that the instance serves as “a reminder of the risks faced by frontline responders.”Almost 80 health personnel have been infected, emphasising the dangers they face and the significance of improving infection prevention and control,” he stated.

The case, revealed Wednesday, involves a doctor who worked with the Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), according to the non-governmental organization. The patient “boarded a commercial flight from Kinshasa and was almost asymptomatic — except for headaches,” according to the French health ministry.
