The Nigerian Senate Approves a Measure Authorizing the Establishment of State Police
The nation’s police force, which is currently under federal control but has been overburdened by a growing insecurity crisis, will be decentralized under the proposed constitutional amendment. The federal police will work in tandem with the state police.
Analysts claim that the lack of police presence in large rural areas has made the nation’s security problems worse by enabling extremist groups to operate unchecked. The United Nations reports that jihadists and criminal organizations have killed tens of thousands of civilians.
The federal police would still be in charge of organized crime, border enforcement, counterterrorism, and other national security matters, but each of the 36 states in the union would be able to establish a police force that satisfies a minimal national requirement.
The president is supporting the bipartisan proposal, which has been discussed numerous times in the past and has long been seen as a solution to the nation’s escalating disputes.
Insecurity has increased under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu since extremists have begun to operate in the southern area.
