Burkina Faso Sever Diplomatic Links with France
Burkina Faso’s ruling junta broke diplomatic ties with former colonial master France on Friday, accusing Paris of consistently acting against the country’s interests. Captain Ibrahim Traore’s military administration, in power since a coup in September 2022, has a strict attitude toward critical voices and is hostile to Westerners, especially France. The government of Burkina Faso hereby announces the national and international world that it has chosen to terminate diplomatic relations with France effective today, June 26, 2026,” it said in a statement broadcast on the west African country’s national television.
The junta also accused France of harboring “neocolonial ambitions, as evidenced by its active support for subversive networks and terrorists who are bringing our country and the Sahel into mourning.”
France described it as a “hostile and baseless decision” that “illustrated the troubling drift of the Burkinabe authorities,” and stated that “the necessary reciprocal measures are being reviewed.” Burkina Faso, like several of its neighbors, has been plagued by terrible violence perpetrated by Al-Qaeda and Islamic State militants for the past decade.
