Residents of Khartoum Welcome the Government Troops that Took Back the Area from the RSF

About 40 kilometres south of Khartoum, residents hailed army troops who had taken back the region from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. One of the largest markets in the area, the now-demolished Allafah market, is located in the Allafah neighbourhood.

On Thursday, residents expressed their happiness at seeing army personnel, saying they had been living in fear. We were leading a life devoid of existence. We drank and ate, but we didn’t feel alive in every way,” local lawyer Burai Abdel Moneim remarked.

The capital and other cities throughout Sudan have been devastated by the conflict, which began in April 2023. Millions of people have been displaced and over 28,000 people have died as a result.

The army has arrived, thank God. We went out to shout and give thanks to God because we are happy. We had experienced a very trying time, so we couldn’t believe the soldiers had come,” another resident, Nawal Abdul Aziz, said.

The military is getting closer to retaking complete control of the city from the rival RSF after Sudan’s army announced on Wednesday that it had retaken Khartoum’s international airport and that the military head had returned to the capital for the first time in almost two years of fighting.
