Reiterating its Demand that Taiwan move its de Facto Embassy, South Africa
The demand that Taiwan relocate its de facto embassy from Pretoria, the nation’s administrative capital, has been reiterated by South Africa. On Sunday evening, Taiwan’s foreign ministry announced that the embassy would be renamed a “trade office” and that it had been given until the end of March to relocate.
The ministry says the action demonstrates Beijing’s “suppression against South Africa is becoming more serious” and attributes it to pressure from China. In 1998, a year after Pretoria broke off official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a territory that Beijing claims sovereignty over, China opened its embassy in South Africa.
Taiwan disputes this assertion, arguing that it has the right to establish diplomatic relations with other nations. It states that talks for moving the office are still going on between Taipei and Pretoria.
Beijing’s growing influence among developing countries is thought to be highlighted by its decision to request that Taipei move its liaison office. South Africa wants to increase its cooperation with China, which is its biggest economic partner worldwide. Both nations belong to the developing economies that make up the BRICS bloc.
