Protesters Upset That the ICJ Rejected Sudan’s Complaint Against the UAE for Genocide

On Monday, pro-Sudan protesters gathered outside The Hague’s International Court of Justice (ICJ). The highest United Nations court’s decision to dismiss Sudan’s genocide complaint against the United Arab Emirates infuriated them. Despite expressing serious concern about the spiralling violence in Sudan, the ICJ determined that it lacked jurisdiction in the case.

Although both nations have ratified the 1948 Genocide Convention, the United Arab Emirates has a “reservation” to the section of the treaty that permits nations to bring legal action against one another at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for disagreements.

Therefore, he stated, what is happening today is not the end of the game.” Khartoum has charged the UAE of aiding the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the ongoing civil conflict in Sudan, therefore committing genocide.

It claimed that the rebel militia was being armed and supported by the Emiratis in its bloody conflict with the Sudanese army. Over 14 million people have been displaced and up to 150,000 people are thought to have killed during the two sides’ more than two-year struggle.
