After Being Threatened with Deportation, the ECOWAS Team departs Guinea-Bissau

According to a delegation from the ECOWAS (West African Regional group), the president threatened Guinea-Bissau with expulsion. The team was dispatched there last month to assist the nation in reaching a “political consensus” on how to hold elections this year.

According to the statement, it had “prepared a draft agreement on a roadmap for elections” and was in the process of presenting it to the relevant parties for approval. However, in response to President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s warning, the squad decided to depart early on Saturday morning.

The report that it claims it will now deliver to the president of ECOWAS includes a recommendation for an accord that would result in “inclusive and peaceful elections.” Tension in the nation has increased around the expiration date of his five-year tenure. The Supreme Court of Justice decided that his tenure as president expires on September 4th, despite the opposition’s claim that it ended last week.

Embalo postponed a second round of general elections scheduled for last November and has subsequently declared that they will now take place on November 30 of this year. The opposition has resisted the postponement.

Since gaining independence in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has experienced several military takeovers, including two attempts to remove Embalo, the most recent of which occurred in December 2023.
