Ahead of the Meeting to Select a New Pope, Vatican Talks are Still Ongoing

Cardinals convened at the Vatican on Monday as daily discussions continue in preparation for the conclave, which begins on Wednesday and will pick the new pope. Many have stated that they are still unsure of who will take over as head of the Catholic Church worldwide after Pope Francis died a little more than two weeks ago.
We don’t know one another, and we hail from 70 different nations. According to French Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco, “there is a ‘college’ [of cardinals] that is beginning to take shape and we can see that there are a lot of personalities who could be pope.
Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, meantime, stated that “three or four days” after the conclave began, white smoke could be seen rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. If no decision is made, the cardinals burn their votes with an additional chemical at the end of each day to turn the smoke from the chimney black. The product turns white upon reaching an agreement, indicating to everyone observing in St. Peter’s Square and beyond that a new pope has been selected.
