On his Way to the Olympics, a Moroccan Boxer Exchanges Punches and Provides Medical Attention

Widad Bertal, Morocco’s newly crowned world boxing champion in the 52-54 kg division, is juggling rigorous training with her burgeoning career as a multi-specialty nurse as she sets her sights on the 2028 Olympic Games. The 25-year-old clinched the gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Nis, Serbia, in March 2025, overcoming an Olympic champion.
I worked hard and achieved a gold medal at the World Championship,” Bertal said during a training session. “My goal is to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympic Games, and I will start preparing from now.
Bertal, who has won two African championships in 2023 and 2024, highlights how boxing has improved her life. “I feel much more confident now because of that. It has benefited me monetarily and ethically,” she said.
Along with her accomplishments in boxing, Bertal obtained her nursing degree in 2023 and is currently juggling the demands of both careers.
With the help of her parents, Mohammed Bertal and Fatima El Bouhadi, she is now working with Cuban instructors and the national squad in preparation for Olympic qualifying. Bertal admits that juggling her work and sporting goals might be difficult.
