Namibia: The Supreme Court Dismisses the Challenge to the Outcome of the Presidential Election

The Supreme Court of Namibia dismissed an opposition party appeal to the country’s presidential election from the previous year. The action will enable the nation’s ruling party’s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to assume office in March.

The SWAPO party, which has controlled the country for nearly 30 years, won both the presidential and legislative elections back in November. Opposition parties said the vote was faulty and might be void due to a voting extension of several days and other problems.

However, the nation’s top judge dismissed the Independent Patriots for Change’s appeal on Friday, ruling that the voting extension did not violate the law.

The IPC, which finished second in the election, declared that it would abide by the ruling. On March 21, Nandi-Ndaitwah is scheduled to take the oath of office as president. She will be the first female president of the nation.
