A Funeral for a TikTok Content Moderator Was Organised in Kenya

A Nigerian content moderator stationed in Kenya who passed away last month under mysterious circumstances had a funeral on Thursday. Three days after she failed to appear at work, Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi’s decomposing remains were discovered on 7 March at her flat outside of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Her older brother, who flew to Nairobi for the poignant service, was one of the mourners. As friends and coworkers praised Olubunmi as “selfless,” he was stricken with sadness.
Before her death, Olubunmi, 43, who worked as a TikTok content moderator under contract with the international outsourcing company Teleperformance, had complained of exhaustion; the reason of her death has not been disclosed.
She was “desperate to go home,” according to her coworkers, but she was not granted leave. In a statement released in March, Teleperformance Kenya stated that she was not refused permission to return home. A representative for the firm paid tribute to Olubunmi, calling him “a selfless, compassionate, and deeply caring individual.”
In the past, content moderators employed by Kenyan subcontracted companies have reported working circumstances that include intimidation, long hours, low pay, and a lack of mental health care. Over 100 former Facebook content moderators have filed lawsuits against the social media platform for unjust firing, inadequate remuneration, and unfavourable working conditions.
