G7 Foreign Ministers will Discuss African-related Concerns During their Meeting.
Russia’s war in Ukraine and the escalating tensions in the Middle East are among the topics discussed during a session of the G7 foreign ministers that Mauritania’s foreign minister, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, is leading.
Rome and Washington have been having extensive discussions on deepening their G-7 partnership with the AU, another goal of the talks that started on Wednesday on the Italian vacation island of Capri.
Following the attack, the G7 countries vowed to back Israel in retaliation for what they believed to be an Israeli bombing on April 1 that killed two generals and numerous other Iranian personnel at Iran’s embassy compound in Damascus.
Regarding the discussion of whether Israel should retaliate, de-escalate, or whether Iran was right or wrong to shoot missiles at Israel last week, the AU’s position has been ambiguous as EU leaders consider tightening sanctions against Iran. It was an unprecedented deed. Specialists point out that the AU does not, in general, support sanctions. The bloc has consistently voiced its support for the lifting of Western sanctions against Zimbabwe, Cuba, and other nations.
