FBI Connects Suspect’s Previous visits to the Truck Assault in the new Year
According to an FBI official on Sunday, the man responsible for the deadly truck attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day that killed 14 people had already been to the city twice and used hands-free glasses to shoot video of the French Quarter. Before the event, Houston-based U.S. citizen Shamsud-Din Jabbar also traveled to Ontario, Canada, and Cairo, Egypt. But whether these trips are connected to the assault is still up in the air, Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia said during a press briefing.
Early on Wednesday, Jabbar, a 42-year-old Houston native and former U.S. Army soldier, carried out the attack. During a dispute at the scene of the sad occurrence on Bourbon Street, which is known for its vibrant environment in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter, he was shot and killed by police. Raia stated, “We are actively looking into possible domestic and international associates, but we have not found any indications of an accomplice within the United States. The FBI special agent in charge of the New Orleans Field Office, Lyonel Myrthil, disclosed that the suspect visited Cairo in the summer of 2023 and then Canada shortly after.
