Shortly before he was scheduled to speak to the nation on national television, President Andry Rajoelina reportedly departed the country following weeks of anti-government rallies. An opposition politician in the Indian Ocean nation said Monday that Andry Rajoelina, the president of Madagascar, had left the country after an elite military unit allegedly staged a coup against the government.

The lawmaker’s remarks were made just before Rajoelina was scheduled to address the Madagascar people on national television. The demonstrations, which were first spearheaded by student organizations, took a significant turn on Saturday when members of the elite CAPSAT military unit escorted protesters to a square in Antananarivo, the capital, and demanded that Rajoelina and a number of government ministers resign.

The squad claimed to have taken control of all Madagascar’s armed forces, having assisted Rajoelina in becoming the country’s first transitional leader in a 2009 military-backed coup.Rajoelina “ran away” from the government on Sunday as soldiers turned against him, according to Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, the head of the opposition in parliament.
