A Month after being Closed, Haiti’s Main airport reopens under Strict Security
A month after being forced to close due to gang violence in the city, Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s main international airport reopened on Wednesday. Roads leading to Toussaint Louverture International Airport were heavily guarded at checkpoints.
People entering the region were screened by Haitian military, who were aided by Kenyan police who were part of a United Nations-backed operation in the nation. On Wednesday, the Guy Malary terminal, which handles domestic flights, also reopened. In November, gangs opened fire on commercial aircraft, forcing the airport to close for the second time this year.
According to the Haitian government, the decision to return to normal operations is a strategic move meant to restore security and stimulate the economy.
The airport has reopened, although it is unclear when commercial flights will start up again. The statement coincided with the Federal Aviation Administration, the US government’s aviation watchdog, extending a ban on US airlines operating flights there.
