As the reported number of probable patients decreased, the only airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that allows humanitarian organizations to reach the epicenter of an Ebola outbreak reopened on Tuesday.
The World Health Organization issued an international health alert after the 100 million-person nation announced on May 15 that it was fighting a significant epidemic of the highly contagious hemorrhagic fever.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, visited the outbreak’s epicenter on Saturday after speaking with Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on Monday. The WHO and Congolese health authorities have reported 48 deaths from 321 confirmed cases of illness.
The Ugandan Ministry of Health reports that fifteen cases, including one fatality, have also been documented in neighboring Uganda. Based on data from the Congolese authorities, the WHO announced on Tuesday that the number of probable cases has decreased to 116 from 906 late last week.
According to WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier in Geneva, several individuals “have been cleared out” of the data when it was discovered that they had other illnesses with comparable early symptoms or an unrelated fever.
