Following a Fatal Fire at an Orphanage, the Prime Minister of Algeria Pays Survivors a Visit
Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited with survivors following reports that at least 11 people, including children, had died in a fire at an orphanage in the nation’s capital. A heatwave has been plaguing Algeria for a few days, and in only one week, about 1,000 fires have been reported. “On behalf of the president and the members of the government, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims,” Ghrieb stated.
In the Algiers suburb of Mohammadia, firefighters had been fighting to put out the flames since before daybreak.We heard the children screaming and the fire engines arrive at around three in the morning,” said Abdessalam Merrah, 41, a local resident.Sadly, we were informed that eleven people had already passed away despite our best efforts to assist.
On Thursday morning, an AFP journalist noticed black smears surrounding the building’s windows. According to a witness, firefighters removed metal bars from a window with a chainsaw. An other 19 persons were hurt in the fire, the cause of which is unknown, according to Algeria’s civil defense, which also stated that the number was tentative.
