Rebels Attack a Malian Army Convoy in the North, Resulting in Casualties
Tuareg militants ambushed a Malian army convoy departing the vital northern town of Anefis on Saturday morning, according to military and security officials. In the most recent of several coordinated attacks in the west African nation, fighters from the Tuareg separatist movement FLA and the jihadist organization JNIM, which has ties to Al-Qaeda, briefly took control of the town on July 4. This morning, there was an attack close to Tabankort on our convoy that was travelling from Anefis to Gao. The battle is still going on. “It’s an ambush,” a Gao-based military source told AFP.
The incident was also verified by a FLA source.Although the remainder of the convoy was able to proceed, the army sustained significant casualties, according to a security official who asked to remain anonymous. A local official continued, “There are numerous casualties.
The FLA claimed to have sent pictures of dozens of army prisoners. According to the official toll issued by the general staff on July 12, around 30 Malian troops were killed and over 60 were injured in the recent violent battles in Anefis. After several days of fierce fighting, the Malian army and Russian paramilitaries from the Africa Corps recaptured Anefis on July 10.
