Nigeria, Germany to Boost Economic, Trade Links
Germany’s foreign minister on Wednesday concluded a two-day visit to Nigeria, with Berlin looking to boost business opportunities across Africa as the United States adopts a more isolationist stance and Russia and China exert geo-political pressure.
Johann Wadephul, who was in the economic capital Lagos Tuesday, urged for “strengthening trade and investment” at a meeting with his counterpart Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu in Abuja. Against the warlords in politics, against these Trumps and Putins and Xis… we desperately need new partners in this world,” Green party member of parliament Claudia Roth, who accompanied Wadephul, told AFP.
Tensions have spiked between the United States and Europe over diplomatic and trade issues as US President Donald Trump has upended global trade policy and threatened the stability of the NATO military alliance.
The European economy is suffering from what it deems unfair Chinese trade practices, while Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is entering its fifth year. China and Russia have also forged commercial and security links, respectively, in Africa.
Wadephul, on his third trip to Africa this year, said “the potential of our economic partnership is far from exhausted” in Nigeria, “especially in information technology and the vibrant start-up sector.
