Thousands Pay Respect to Mali’s Deceased Defense Minister amid Strict Security
On Thursday, thousands of people paid respect to Sadio Camara, Mali’s killed defence minister, at a ceremony held under heavy security in the capital, Bamako. On Saturday, a car bomb exploded outside Camara’s home in Kati, killing his wife and two granddaughters.
The attack was part of a two-day concerted campaign by Islamist terrorists and their Tuareg separatist allies against military installations around the country. Junta commander Assimi Goita, dressed in war fatigues, paid tribute to Camara by bowing in front of his casket.
Camara’s relatives and friends attended the ceremony, as did officials from Mali and overseas, including the defense ministers of bordering Niger and Burkina Faso. There were many armed soldiers there, and checkpoints and barricades barred roads leading to the parade field, with security forces carefully controlling entry. Camara was a prominent figure in the junta and was credited with orchestrating Mali’s recent rapprochement with Russia.
