Hundreds Gather in Chad for the Release of the Rival Masra

Hundreds gathered in N’Djamena on Wednesday to urge the release of Chadian opposition leader and former premier Succes Masra, who has Rival been detained for nearly a year. The activists were from Les Transformateurs (Transformers), the country’s largest opposition party, which was commemorating its ninth anniversary at its offices in the capital.

The majority of attendees were young people protesting for the release of Masra, a vocal critic of President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno. The Transformers Party’s secretary-general, Ngagorngar Tog-Yeum, stated that an innocent man has been stripped of his freedom and basic rights for representing the hope of the people. He also demanded the release of numerous other GCAP movement opposition activists jailed in recent days, claiming that they, like Masra, “have no business being in prison”.

Last August, a judge in N’Djamena condemned Masra to 20 years in prison. He was convicted of hate speech, xenophobia, and inciting a massacre, all of which refer to the intercommunal violence that killed 42 people in May.
