An Important Tessalit Military Camp in Northern Mali is Taken Over by a Rebel Coalition
A crucial military camp in the country’s north has been taken over by Tuareg separatists and jihadists fighting together to overthrow Mali’s junta. The army and its Russian mercenary friends have turned over the vital Tessalit military base close to the Algerian border, according to numerous reports.
AFP journalists were informed by a security source in Gao, south of the camp, that “no clashes took place” during the base’s seizure because regular forces had already left. Forces at Tessalit are dispersing southward, according to a representative of the Tuareg-dominated Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) separatist organization.
Friday’s strike comes after FLA separatists and Islamic rebels launched widespread, lethal attacks on junta strongholds around Mali last weekend. At least 23 people died as a result, including defense minister Sadio Camara, a crucial member of the military-led administration. At his home in Kati, a garrison town close to Bamako, he was killed by a car bomb. The insurgents captured the northern city of Kidal during the assaults.
