The UGTT Union Leader in Tunisia Demands an End to Internal Strife
The leader of Tunisia’s General Labour Union (UGTT) urged members to band together and put aside internal differences during a protest on Friday in honor of International Workers Day. Slaheddine Selmi denied having any political aspirations while highlighting the union’s contribution to the national conversation. We have often said that we have never pursued or sought power. Selmi addressed the assembly of supporters in Tunis, saying, “That is for political parties and politicians.
However, we also state and reaffirm that we will never consent to being prevented from performing our duties as a full-fledged social partner, enjoying all constitutional and legal rights, and upholding our obligation to protect workers’ interests and keep an eye on any policies and circumstances that affect these economic and social interests, those of our members in particular, and those of our people in general.
Greater openness and protecting the union’s independence from political manipulation were Selmi’s two top concerns when she was elected to chair the body in March. The union’s internal strife earlier this year threatened to give President Kais Saied the confidence to weaken the union’s bargaining position. A planned walkout against the Tunisian government’s suppression of the opposition was canceled on January 21.
