Tanzania Proposes Constitutional Change After Post-Election Bloodshed

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has promised constitutional reform in reaction to last year’s post-election violence, which killed hundreds of people. A government commission formed to investigate the killings released its conclusions on Thursday.

It said that 518 people were murdered and at least 2,000 were injured. The opposition believes thousands of people died and describes the study as “an attempt to whitewash the regime’s crimes.” Hassan stated that the commission’s recommendations will lead constitutional modifications and pledged the formation of a reconciliation commission.

The president announced the formation of a criminal investigation commission to probe the post-election disturbances. What happened in October 2025 did not prevent or alleviate the problems we have as a country. Although turmoil and violence broke out, they did not solve our concerns. Instead, they exacerbated our problems,” explained Hassan. She stated that the organization will identify those who planned, sponsored, and participated in illegal crimes such as looting and destroying infrastructure.
